Where, after all, do universal human rights begin? In small places, close to home, so close and so small that they cannot be seen on any map of the world. Yet they are the world of the individual person: the neighborhood he lives in; the school or college he attends; the factory, farm or office where he works. Such are the places where every man, woman and child seeks equal justice, equal opportunity, equal dignity without discrimination

An important part of the work of the Commission is to listen and respond to the needs and concerns of community groups and individuals, sometimes in the smallest places.

We place particular emphasis on working with those whose rights are not currently given adequate protection such as older people, mental health service users, and people with disabilities, as well as those who provide services for them, to raise awareness and understanding of human rights and the role they can play in advancing human dignity.

We want to help take human rights beyond the formalities of the legal system and into the everyday life of all in the community, seeking to influence education, media and other forms of communication.
